Yellow / Apollo
Apollo is a complex, diverse and incredibly important God of many things—the Sun, Healing, Music, the Arts, Prophecy, Distance, and Personal Morality are a few.
Because of his relationship with the sun—the ancients believed he pulled the sun across the sky with his four-horse chariot every morning—Apollo is associated with the color yellow.
It was Apollo’s oracle—a very special female priestess—who foretold the future and gave wise advice in the god’s temple at Delphi in Greece.
The Delphic Maxims were inscribed on this same temple. These are a set of moral principles that Apollo gave to humankind, perhaps the most famous being “Know Thyself.”
As you watch the burning of this yellow candle, one dedicated to Apollo and illuminated by Vesta (because the flame is always Vesta), let yourself relax into a meditative state as you focus on the flame and melting wax. Reflect upon the various aspects of Apollo, letting your intuition guide you.
If you’ve made mistakes or failed at something in your life, it’s okay to let yourself start again. It’s a new day. That is the promise that Apollo makes every morning when his chariot pulls the morning sun into the sky.
Apollo’s changing perspective as he moves across the sky can also encourage you to see your situation or any particular problems from a new perspective—so actively and energetically challenge yourself to do that. It can make all the difference.
Look for signs in the shifting wax and tune in to your own body and mind. Have you been taking care of yourself physically and emotionally?
Or have you been neglecting yourself in some way, perhaps procrastinating when you know you should be getting healthier? Have you been getting enough rest, exercising and eating well?
Tapping into your intuition, you might want to explore whether there is anything toxic in your life. This could be a bad habit, a person, or a situation that is unhealthy for you or causing you too much anxiety or pain. Tomorrow, when healing Apollo brings the sun up, you have another chance to break free of that. Think about how you might be able to do that in a practical way.
As the god of distance, perhaps you can use the spirit of Apollo to help you get distance from a person or situation that isn’t good for you.
This yellow candle burn is also an ideal one to spark your creativity. As the god of the arts, the spirit of Apollo can inspire your artistry and imagination, making you even more innovative and receptive to new ideas and new approaches. Open your mind as the candle burns and let you creativity flare, move and shift as the candle does.
Even if you aren’t an artist, could you benefit from immersing yourself in the beauty of art right now? Perhaps you are going through an “ugly” time in your life...if so, it may bring you some peace, perspective and happiness to listen to a beautiful symphony or take a walk (even a virtual one online!) through a famous museum, losing yourself in the paintings and sculptures of the world’s great artists.
This yellow candle burn is a particularly good one for self-reflection, since Apollo is so associated with looking inward, with knowing oneself. That aspect, and your own intuition, can be a powerful combination. So use it—look inward, and explore your own being, personal morality, and self-awareness.
As with all the candles in this candle-burning series, this yellow Apollo-dedicated one burned with the characteristics of the god it is associated with. The flame burned unusually high on the wick above the candle wax at times, almost like it was floating, sun-like, in the sky. The wax melted in beautiful, complex flows, and there was a gorgeous reflection of the flame on the white platform, one that reminded me of the sun reflecting in water.
Come back to this candle burning video whenever you need to reflect upon or embrace the aspects of Apollo, always tapping into your intuition to better understand yourself, to make peace with the past, to find perspective, inspiration and guidance in the present, and to feel hope for the future.
