Blue / Minerva
Minerva is the Goddess of War and of Wisdom. She is also the Goddess of the Arts and Professions.
As the daughter of Jupiter, Minerva—along with Jupiter and Juno—is part of what is called the Capitoline Triad, so she is a central and powerful goddess.
Minerva is often associated with the color blue: I chose a sky blue color in my candle burning video, in tribute to the abode of the gods in the sky.
As the goddess of war, Minerva was incredibly important to the ancient Romans. While Mars, the god of war, is typically characterized by an almost unchecked war-like nature, Minerva is different.
She is more restrained, more thoughtful, and more patient. While Mars might run straight into battle with a war cry on his lips, Minerva will think about it more and weigh the risks of battle against the potential rewards. She therefore embodies assertiveness, but also self-control.
As you watch the burning of this sky blue candle, one dedicated to Minerva and illuminated by Vesta (because the flame is always Vesta) you can sit back to reflect upon the qualities and aspects that Minerva embodies, and how those might relate to your life or what you are going through.
Think about that all-important balance between acting or taking up arms and thinking things through with rational forethought. How do you manage that balance in your life? Do you tend to be impulsive and then regret your words or actions later on? Or perhaps you think too much and don’t ever end up taking action...that can be just as problematic. Balance is key, and Minerva is the goddess to focus on when reflecting upon that.
As the flame sways and the wax melts and moves, think about this balance and use your own intuition to determine whether you have it right in your life, or how you might tip the scales in a way that serves you better.
In terms of self-control, do you have enough of it? Are you able to consciously make decisions about your behavior or choices and then follow through with those decisions? This might pertain to anything—your emotions, your eating or spending habits, or other lifestyle choices. Do some serious reflecting on that while the candle burns, looking for signs that speak to you. This is how your inner voice speaks to you.
When it comes to your career or profession, or a passionate hobby or activity, are you realizing the full potential of that? That is another area of your life that this candle burning can help you illuminate and explore. Minerva is a crafty goddess—do you need more of that attitude or quality in your life? Ask yourself that question and reflect seriously on the answer, and how you can apply it to your life.
As with all the candles in this candle-burning series, this sky blue Minerva-dedicated one burned with the characteristics of the goddess it is associated with. It burned for a long time before anything happened (this prolonged and uneventful phase was edited out), as though carefully considering what to do. That’s certainly consistent with the wise nature of Minerva. Even after the first wax drizzle fell, the candle burned with a steady and measured intensity, and burned that way to the very end.
Come back to this candle burning video whenever you need to reflect upon or embrace the aspects of Minerva, always tapping into your intuition to better understand yourself, to make peace with the past, to find perspective, inspiration and guidance in the present, and to feel hope for the future.
